Another passage in the fog

18 October 2007
October 6, 2007 - Saturday
Location: Atlantic City, NJ to 38 19' .528 N 75 05' .965 W departing for Ocean City, Maryland

I awoke at 5:00AM to prepare to leave at 6:00AM. Kelly is slow to get up; it is definitely early for him. We looked out the windows and noticed that our friend the fog was back. Now it is even denser then when we arrived. We delayed leaving until 8:30AM as the fog was suppose to lift by 9:00PM.

Well at 11:40AM it was still foggy. We have 6-knot winds right on our nose, so once again we are motoring our 70-mile trek. I know that someday we will get to sail. Anyway, we want to keep trekking south so we can stay with the warm weather. We couldn't have timed it any better. Yesterday in Atlantic City it was 10 degrees above normal. Yeah for us! Presently, we are off of Cape May and crossing the main channel into Delaware Bay. We hear a lot of traffic on the VHF radio due to large ships passing through. At least we are passing during daylight, but with fog. Thankfully we have radar to help us locate buoys and boats that are not visible to the eye.

Around 4:00am we hear a tug captain on the VHF radio warning another vessel that he was coming through with a 600-foot barge. I think I would want to be out of his way. The girls are again sprawled out on the cockpit side cushions, in and out of sleep. The motion of the rolling seas and the engine running definitely lulls you to sleep.

Extra:
It was the summer of 2001 when we were bored and found ourselves riding around in the car going from one marina to the next looking at other people's boats. It must have been a lousy sailing day for us not to be out and about somewhere on our own boat. Then, there it was, sitting on the hard with [...]
