Horses on the beach

20 October 2007

October 7, 2007 - Sunday Morning
Location: 38 19' .345 N 75 06' .022 W - Ocean City, MD safely at anchor

We awoke to beautiful sunshine and no fog! We could now make out the big beautiful houses along the shoreline as well as a big amusement park on a distant shoreline. It was warm again! Kelly and I sat out in the cockpit. Kelly set our coordinates to our next destination Norfolk, Virginia, and I tried to answer all of our email. The wifi kept coming and going, which made it totally frustrating. When I finished my email I looked up, there were wild horses on the shoreline. What a sight! Assateague Island is a barrier island and these horses live on it. A little while later Cpl. Sean came by to see how we were doing. We told him all is well and again were very thankful for his help. We told him we saw the horses on the nearby shore. He suggested that we dinghy over to the island and check out the beach there. No more was needed to be said, we had breakfast and off in the dinghy we went. First, we went towards the marinas off the main channel. There were many nice homes with various color roofs (red, bright blue, white, and black). We ventured down further and found the town docks. We emptied our trash. Its funny how that getting rid of your trash becomes a priority. We then motored back out of the channel and over to the island. The beach is a popular place for locals. We anchored up and went ashore. Wow it is hot! Kristen really wants to go swimming, but we didn't come prepared to swim. The beach sand is so soft and you can see the hoof prints from the horses everywhere. The horses must have headed to the middle of the island where there is an abundance of trees offering them shade. People are only allowed on the beach and only during daylight hours. We plan to stay an hour exploring the beach. We see many small fish and crabs. The crabs dig neat holes on the beach, that about 1 ' in diameter, yet the crabs are half the size. Danielle decides to dig her feet into the mud. She is now sunk in to the mud to the height of Kristen. We take a picture to show that Kristen is as tall as Danielle. While beachcombing we found a few different interesting shells and a kid's shovel. Kristen ends up enjoying the shovel using it to scoop up the water and fish. Regrettably, we head back to the dinghy and then to the boat to get ready for our trek to Norfolk.

Extra:
It was the summer of 2001 when we were bored and found ourselves riding around in the car going from one marina to the next looking at other people's boats. It must have been a lousy sailing day for us not to be out and about somewhere on our own boat. Then, there it was, sitting on the hard with [...]
