Back up island ... Grenada to Carriacou

16 January 2012 | Sandy Island, Carriacou

We endured an awful nine hour slog sailing into wind, coming back up island from Grenada to Carriacou, to enjoy a few days of down-time before our next charter. The only highlight was a small school of dolphins passing by us, and hooking a massive sailfish in the very fertile inter-island passage around the underwater volcano, Kick Em Jenny - of course the sailfish went off with the Captains lure, trace and wire, jumping high into the air as he went off ! After what seemed like an endless journey, we spent the night at Sandy Island (one of our favourite places, in case you hadn't guessed !!) after picking up a mooring ball in the dark - another skillset !! We awoke to a rainy, squally, windy day but managed to spend a couple of wonderful hours snorkelling, swimming through some awesome and healthy coral heads, amongst thousands of tiny fish all trying to hide from the numerous pelicans fishing all around us. What an amazing experience - to have pelicans diving just a few feet away from you, watching their enormous baloon-like bills full up with fish, seeing their massive webbed feet dangling just under the surface, then taking off with one flap of the wings to dive again !
