Crossing the Gulf Stream
27 January 2009 | Bimini Bahamas
Dawn
We left Marathon with our buddy boat, "Morning Glory", Jan 22 & anchored at Rodriguez Key off Key Largo, Fl. We pulled up the anchors at 3:30AM crossing the Gulf Stream to the Bahamas. In case you have not experienced it, the stream is a river that runs south to north along the Florida and US east coast at about 2.5 knots. It gives you a ride!. Alicetown, North Bimini, Bahamas, our destination is still our home. We are in a marina with about ten other boats waiting out fronts from the states usually. Bimini is like living in the forties in a lot of ways. People are very courteous and helpful. Our first issue was to get into the channel without hitting a very large sand bar. Keeping markers in place is very difficult. There is a lot of history here; will write about that later.
