Airlie Beach

We needed to stock up with provisions, beer, red wine and vegetables so we made the short journey to the mainland resort of Airlie Beach. It was a fairly grey day and we motored the 15 or so miles to the town. We anchored off and dinghied in to the yacht club. We revived ourselves at a pleasant restaurant and found a small convenience store. The town is basically one street which is full of travel agents, beauty parlours, sun loungers, and cafes. It caters for backpackers who are heading out to the resorts of the Whitsundays. It doesn't really have a beach as such so they have built a pleasantly designed lagoon swimming area along the front. It's free but was closed when we went past. Like a lot of this area massive development is taking place. There is already a large marina to the North of the town, but another marina development is being constructed to the South. It seemed strange to see so many boats. We have not seen so many charter boats since the Caribbean.
