29 April 2009 | Sarasota to Ft. Lauderdale
Jenny / Party Cloudy / Seas 2-5 ft / 10 kts SE to S to WNW
At about 00:45 we turned off the engine and truly sailed!
The port engine continues to get topped off with oil and transmission fluid, as it's leaking oil. At about 0120 we switched to the aft fuel tank. We all stayed on deck until set for our new course, and then Rick took the helm for a few hours.
Dad got up at 0400 to take a shift, but things turned crazy by an accidental "irons". Rick & Dad set things straight and then Dad returned to his bunk. I took watch at 0610. The wind was starting to clock to the south. Have been experiencing some underdeck slamming, but it's minimal and not bad. I'm very impressed with the boat's ability to move through the water.
As we made our northerly turn the wind was at our stern. We started with the jib, but switched to the genaker (and main). We felt the speed! Our fastest speed was at 15 knots in 20-25 kt winds!
As we approached Ft. Lauderdale, the wind clocked more to the W & then WNW. We changed back to the jib and turned toward the shore, so we wouldn't get headed too soon. Then, we took down the main and gradually had only 2/3 jib out and were still doing 15 kts!
We dropped the hook in Sylvia Bay at 2140. Whew! Now we were ready for some beer, ham sandwiches and a good night sleep.
