In the middle of nowhere

Motorsailing through the channel of Sardinia. The night was calm, despite numerous lightning storms all around us. But no wind. We are still progressing well, thank you Mr Yanmar.

El Kala

We got to El Kala, our last harbor in Algeria after again a nice sailing, almost 2 days, with as a present the whole Gulf of Annaba under spi, with speeds up to 8.5 knots. A pleasure.

Bougie

Again a days without problem. Without wind neither. We arrived at Bejaia (Bougies) in the afternoon, just when the wind increased from 4 to 25 - 30 knots. Formalities to enter the harbor only took 3 hours. It is getting annoying..... When at last we were ready to continue our quest for a couscous, which [...]

Azzefoun

Zemmouri

Algiers

Yesterday, as we started from Algiers to sail towards the East, after about one hour of quite navigation, the engine started to smoke heavily and do abnormal noises.

Once we got there, we were greeted by a refusal of the authorities to let us in the harbor, sending us away to Tunisia. Fortunately, it seems all can be resolved with some arguments in Algeria and after some exchanges over the VHF we finished docked between the vedette of the cost guards, about 55 dinghies of the same coast guards and a trawler.

After a good night sleep, doing some shopping and finally eating this couscous we were looking for, we left El Kala for Sardinia at 1900 CET. This was to take advantage of 2 days of relatively calm weather forecasts, a window of opportunity closing in the afternoon of Sunday.

Formalities to enter the harbor only took 3 hours. It is getting annoying..... When at last we were ready to continue our quest for a couscous, which we are pursuing since our arrival in Algeria, we had other formalities to get out of the port walking and were warned to get quickly back. Of course it was already 8 pm and it was not so safe for foreigners, 2 women and a man, to walk in the city after 9 pm. Useless to say that our quest for a couscous is still on. But we had a nice salad.

Today we are thinking going strait to el Kala, out port of departure of Algeria. A 2 day-sail. This will allow us to have more time in Sardinia.

Yesterday, as we started from Algiers to sail towards the East, after about one hour of quite navigation, the engine started to smoke heavily and do abnormal noises.

We decided to go back to la Madrague under sail only. Fortunately, after the examination by two mechanics, it turned out to be a relatively light problem, related to the decompression system of the engine... Nothing a piece of rope cannot fix

We are about to sail away today.

The main point to be noted about the experience is not to count on the coastal guards : even distant about 350 m from them they did not react to our calls by VHF. They did however came to check the boat again once local people came to help us come into the harbor.
