For us keeping in touch is part of the fun of cruising. I can still can remember during my pre-internet travelling times I was always hunting for some german newspaper, even 2 or 3 days old. These days are gone and we are much more demanding nowadays. The wifi network here in the marina is expensive and not so much to our requirements. My ladies complained a lot and eventually I took some action. First I acquired a toggle with a prepaid vodafone SIM card (see photo). For € 39.- this would give us 7G of traffic within 1 month. Unfortunately after one day it stopped working on my new Asus laptop and on my old Samsung I could not build up a local wifi network.
In the meantime I ordered online from Huawei a mobile hotspot device, but it took several days, until it arrived. Put in the vodafone SIM card and within a few minutes we were online. Up to five devices can be connected and we can establish our wifi network everywhere we go, as long the us a 3G signal.
Eventually I also installed and commissioned the Bullet wifi antenna on the boat. Here in Sicily in many places you can access free wifi, but it might be necessary to bridge some distance if you are in a marina. The antenna is mounted on the radar pole at the stern and we have now excellent reception. As I toasted the wifi router during installation, I had to build up a hotspot on my laptop. This kept my busy for 2 days, but now everything is running smoothly
