The one that got away!
26 May 2018 | Samothraki
Well! Here we are in Samothraki! It's an 'end of the world' sort of place. From 40mls away, as we left Thassos, it was a faint grey lump in the distance with a bunch of clouds apparently tethered to the top. As we got close, the first feature we could make out was a long low spit of land with what looked like the wreck of a yacht on it! (It turned out to be some abandoned wind generating equipment now overtaken by the use of solar power). Our journey here was not without trauma - a nasty swell made the skipper sick and the vagaries of the wind meant we went from motoring, to a double reefed main and back again. Just at the point we were about to put the first reef in - we caught a fish! Long term readers of this blog will know that this is unprecedented! But what a time to do it, healed over, roaring along at 8 knots, the skipper turning green... We had very nearly got it on board when the line snapped and we lost it! Maybe a silver lining - now we could concentrate on getting the sails reefed.
It was a relief to get into the harbour and find plenty of space. We'd just got tied up when the skies darkened, thick black cloud rolling down the mountain and ominous claps of thunder all around. Within minutes the wind was up to 40knots and there was torrential rain - thank heavens we'd left Thassos early enough to avoid it at sea!
