Tread carefully, we’re in a volcano!

18 September 2019 | Nisyros

Looking down from the rim - the crater in the distance

Yes, we're off to see the volcano - in fact Nisyros is a volcano and it's possible to visit the still (slightly) active caldera at its heart. We've hired a car for the day and drive first to the once thriving village of Emporios situated on the rim. Now the houses are mainly deserted, but some are being renovated as holiday homes. Not surprising as the views out to sea and down into the flat fertile plain inside the caldera, are spectacular, as is the drive down to the caldera floor. At the far end of the caldera are 5 active craters. We park up and climb down into the largest. As we wander over stony ground we're surrounded by spurts of sulphur smelling gasses and have to watch out for areas of bubbling mud!
