Calm returns to Pathani as boats start to leave

It certainly blew for 36 hours, and we had some rain, but nothing like the original forecasts - maybe 30/35 knots. An anticlimax you could say, but as news started to reach us of the damage done elsewhere, we felt lucky to have escaped.

A change of course

The forecast looks a bit better

When we started this voyage, 10 years ago, we'd get weather forecasts that had to last for 3 or 4 days between visits to internet cafes or harbour notice boards. Now we get multiple forecasts, updated every few hours. And the news is good - for us - the track of the medicane has moved north of us and the forecast winds for tomorrow are diminishing all the time. Emails and calls are coming in from friends in the Ionian, already effected, with graphic details of what's happening over there and from others like us sat waiting wondering how they’re going to fare.

Medicane? What’s a medicane?

Time to pack the ' Grab bag'

A hurricane in the Med. Quite rare to happen in Greece. And this one seems to be coming straight for us! 100 knot winds and torrential rain. Yesterday I shopped for 5 days at anchor. That was after we rang Leros marina to see if they had any space, they didn't and the next best option is to anchor at Pathani, an enclosed bay at the north of the island. Now we're here sitting with some trepidation with about 25 other boats all glued to the weather forecasts.

Highly recommended

Lithi - another harbour with plenty of room for us. The village is not a patch on Vossilos but the walk we do high up into the mountains is fabulous.

A hidden gem, but at what cost?

The harbour at Limnia - that's LP in the distance.

We want to explore the west side of Chios, which is new to us, and have come to Limnia, the harbour for Vossilos. It was extended 3 years ago, and you have to ask why? There are facilities for about 80 yachts, but it's never going to be a popular route for charterers as it's too far from any other places. But it's perfect for us, as there's no one else here we can tuck right in and get shelter from the high winds we're expecting. We can even swim off the back of the boat. Vossilos is a lovely village a couple of miles up the road, with good walking and tavernas serving the local population that we make good use of. The high winds come and go and we have to make ourselves move on!

Sloppy stowing, the crew's sacked!

Make sure all the locker doors are properly shut!

We have a good sail to Chios and are heeled over for most of the way. I notice when I go below that the low water warning light is flashing - which seems very early. The reason is soon apparent! The locker door above the sink wasn't properly secured and has come open, and pressed against the tap, which has disgorged a full tank of water!
Fortunately, it's only one of 2 tanks - and we have the opportunity to refill as soon as we're in harbour. Crew is reluctantly re-instated!

Moving south

Our route this Autumn

Back from our summer break at home, our Autumn itinerary is to move the boat to Leros where she's booked in for the winter. A few days in Skala Loutra, a visit to Plomari then we leave Lesvos for Chios via the remote islet of Psara.

Extra:
We bought Lazy Pelican - a 2006 Bavaria 39 - in November 2008 with the intention of cruising in the Eastern Mediterranean. The question then arose of how to get her there from Poole on the South Coast of England! Our main sailing experience was 5 years cruising in Croatia where we enjoyed short day [...]
