Tread carefully, we’re in a volcano!

Looking down from the rim - the crater in the distance
Yes, we're off to see the volcano - in fact Nisyros is a volcano and it's possible to visit the still (slightly) active caldera at its heart. We've hired a car for the day and drive first to the once thriving village of Emporios situated on the rim. Now the houses are mainly deserted, but some are being renovated as holiday homes. Not surprising as the views out to sea and down into the flat fertile plain inside the caldera, are spectacular, as is the drive down to the caldera floor. At the far end of the caldera are 5 active craters. We park up and climb down into the largest. As we wander over stony ground we're surrounded by spurts of sulphur smelling gasses and have to watch out for areas of bubbling mud!
Nisyros - if only we could stop

Arriving outside the little yacht harbour of Pali we have a problem - we can’t get the sail down! The jammer that holds the main halyard in place has broken. For a while it looks like we might have to cut it but with some ingenuity we manage to get some slack on the sail side of the jammer and force it open. We couldn’t have asked for better conditions - light wind and plenty of space - to get it sorted.
Back in Leros

It's nearly a week since we arrived at the tiny airport.
No need for a taxi, we wheeled our bags round to the boat yard. The launch went well and we motored down to Lakki - where strong winds have kept us ever since. For two days there were no ferries from Athens and one day the airport closed - with one of the flights turned back half way here. So we were glad to be tied up, able to reprovision and enjoy the company of other boats, but after 5 days everyone was itching to go even if it was still quite windy. So, well stowed, with life jackets and harnesses to hand, we set off - and had a great sail all the way to Kos!
