Heading North
04 October 2016 | The Bight
Broad reach through the night going generally North with pretty heavy conditions. Seemed to ease about 4am so immediately up to set more sail. Not Likely! The far more astute operation - snuggle down, wait for first splash of sunshine, coffee, wet weather gear and harness, check no green water over the cabin and then set main with two reefs. Even in daylight in these seas a difficult task. Dropping the main which has to be done there and then is much more straight forward. Just release the main halyard and the sail drops into the lazy jacks, toss over a few lines to snug the sail onto the boom, dodge green water over the cabin, take off wet weather gear, coffee, snuggle down, try to ignore crashing and banging.
The weather forecast for the next few days looks quite benign especially further North. It may be a bit slower but just has to be more comfortable. Really nice travelling in 20 to 25 knots under storm jib and double reefed main at the moment so maybe tomorrow will actually head where I'm supposed to be going- West!
