Well I ended up spending nearly a month in Albany and apart from the welcome tour of the sights in the first week kept pretty much to myself tied alongside the Emu Point Slipway Services jetty. Darryn and John did an excellent job of installing a heavy duty SS tube in the auxiliary rudder in good time but because other required parts were slow in arriving from Germany, getting here last Wednesday 16th November, the Windpilot could not be installed till Thursday 17th. As has always been the case Peter despatched these promptly but I unadvisedly asked him to send this by registered post which he did. The post office in Hamburg issued a tracking number but the parcel just completely disappeared so Peter sent a second consignment via UPS which took the reasonable time of one week to arrive.
On Friday motored round to the very smart Albany Council marina which has a 2 hour limit free pontoon just 800 metres from a fully stocked IGA where I loaded up with fresh steaks bread and veges. Motoring back to Emu Point I thought it would be too much trouble to hoist the main in the light breeze but then realised I had put on my spare ( third ) jib and quickly unfurled this. The speed went up even with the motor stopped and the refurbished wind vane was engaged. It felt really great to be sailing again!
A Southwesterly was forecast for Sunday but arrived early so with the water tanks topped up left Emu Point at 1 pm Saturday and by 1:30 was sailing along briskly with double reefed main and the spare jib which had originally been on my previous yacht Katherine Ann. It set well and fits perfectly and was soon bowling along at seven knots in the scenic Albany outer harbour. Today Sunday 20th November have one reef in the main and the staysail and moving along comfortably on a broad reach, headed for the bottom of Tasmania. The outlook is for good quartering winds for the whole trip there but of course ten days is the far future for a forecaster.
Well that's about it for now. Hoping to be Home for Christmas!
