There's a High in The Bight
31 December 1969 | 440 miles SSE Albany
Many years ago whilst ' between boats ' I worked briefly as a deckie on a prawn trawler and so often when I turned up for work the skipper advised that the proposed trip was cancelled as there was " A High in The Bight " which may or may not indicate a slight strengthening of the Trades. No Trip No Pay was the contract so after a few desultory hours of " maintenance " which consisted mostly of making the skipper and his visiting mates cups of tea and whose main topic of conversation was the unreliability of deckhands I would wander back home. On answering the statement You're Early Tonight I'd break down and tell her There's A High In The Bight. For emphasis I'd add " There's Always a B#}â¬â¬}y High in the Bight"
And so it has come to pass here I am in the Bight and yes surrounded by shifty shifting Highs. Whilst in Albany the prevailing lore was that it was rapidly approaching the season for strong Easterlies so luckily I left on the last of the Westerlies and had a couple of days of fine fast sailing which ended yesterday morning with a completely windless day until midnight. A nice steady Northerly set in which is now easing as yet another High settles gracefully around me.
Please do not take this as a complaint just a mere statement of Fact - There are lots of Highs in The Bight.
