Running Free
27 August 2017 | 150 Miles West of Cape Leeuwin WA
9pm Sunday 27th August 2017 ( UTC+8 ) Running before the wind with just the poled out jib and a still heavy swell from the South West produces a rather jerky movement which precludes in any productive work. With the wind veering more to the SE the pole was taken down this afternoon and the jib gybed. On this more Westerly course the movement was much more pleasant. Quite a few squid on the deck which I tossed to the ever present albatrosses which produced quite a squawk fight between two of them. It was also amusing to see them come in to land right behind the boat and with the following fresh breeze had them barefoot aquaplaning for quite some moments. With all the birdlife and squid it was tempting to put out the fishing line and though I couldn't be sure if it was the same Albatross I caught hereabouts a couple of years ago he looked awfully familiar, so the line remained stowed. The weather forecast looks good for running and reaching conditions as I aim to pass just to the North of a high pressure cell which frequently occupies the territory just to the West of here and I can happily bid the Southern Ocean goodbye.
