Beguiling Benguela
12 October 2017 | 1385 Miles South East of St. Helena
8:00pm Thursday 12th October 2017 ( UTC+1 ) After that first exhilarating sail in the full flush of the fresh Benguela Current with flat seas and a fair wind I felt I would be by St. Helena in no time so I have now provided its location as my position report; but the fantastic first days run was not to be replicated. The sailing was good but required a certain amount of patience and sail handling as it's strength and direction continued to change but always from the more difficult aft quadrant. One unfortunate gust overpowered the autopilot with subsequent gybe and possibly some internal damage to the boom vang ( that is the piece that goes from under the boom and to the base of the mast) Its not a significant piece of equipment and I have a feeling it could be fixed but that will certainly wait till some really calm weather. It should be gusting around the 25 knot mark tonight so the sail area is much reduced but we are still making good time. The promise of steady gentle trade winds all the way to St.Helena and beyond is there, with or without the vagaries of the flighty Benguela.
