Pirates
27 October 2017 | 360 Miles North West of Ascension
6:30pm Friday 27th October 2017 ( UTC-1 ) A timely reminder of the dangers of piracy. There is a large area of little wind around the area of Liberia and The Gambia so no problem keeping clear of that coast. The North East Trades come directly from The Canaries to the point where I hope to cross the ITCZ and over the Cape Verde Islands so the most likely initial course is hard on the Starboard tack hoping for a course of due North. The next problem is the Mid Atlantic or Azores High can drift towards the Canaries with the temptation to head East even as far as the Coast of Mauritania and Morocco but this will be resisted. With internet piracy on the increase the scoundrels could well be following this blog - and remember they get the late evening edition hot off the press, so to speak, while the folks back home have to wait till tomorrow morning to read this - then if it's a choice between those devils I'll take the deep blue sea. It is customary in some quarters to review progress round the hundred day mark so at day 96 I'll try to compare this current trip in L'Eau Commotion ( LC )that of the voyage of the Katherine Ann ( KA ) in days SE Cape/Wilsons Promintory KA Day 11 LC Day 9 ( LC+2 ) Cape Leuwin KA Day 30 LC Day 34 (LC -4 ) Cape Aguhlas KA Day 79 LC Day 78 ( LC+1 ) Ascension KA Day 101 LC Day 94 (LC +7 ) A few intangibles to be taken into account here. KA started from Sydney whilst LC travelled slightly further from Southport and the turnpoints - Azores vs Canaries - have different characteristics . The real next comparison will be the time of recrossing the Equator heading South when the distances back to the start point are basically the same. And then ( can we mention it without bringing bad luck ) the time round The Horn. The fishing is still too hard to talk about but I can say a nice big flying fish dropped in just in time for lunch.
