Trying Not To Be Negative

12:00noon Monday 11th December 2017 ( UTC-2 ) Mathematics is a wonderful tool to construct and analyse systems which are too complicated for the human brain to encompass at any one time but it must be always be borne in mind that it is a tool or system that has been constructed by man according to a set of seemingly logical rules. Because of this any result so obtained from mathematics must be viewed in the light of the rules imposed. Probably the first rule we learnt was that of addition and with the well known apples and oranges caveat served us well. Then came subtraction of a smaller number from a bigger number which was usually accomplished fairly easily with numbers below ten but required a little imagination to say take nine from twenty seven. By using the artifice of transforming the simple 2 of the 27 into two tens taking one ten from the twenty to make ten and seventeen and as our brains developed we learnt by rote the result of subtracting numbers below ten from numbers between eleven and nineteen and as our education continued multiplication and then division, of course with some practice, became widely accessible. Depending on the aptitude of the class and the teacher fractions, decimals, areas, circles, volumes speed and perhaps a little trigonometry and algebra usually rounded out our primary education. Usually in our first year of secondary education we were introduced to the concept of negative numbers usually in the order say 7-9 -2, 9-27 -18, the multiplication rules -2 x -18 +36 , +7 x -2 -14 and so forth and later on i where i square root of -1 , therefore making i squared -1 Now however useful these rules may be, and they certainly are, it must always be taken into consideration that they are an artefact and realise that negative numbers have no equivalent in physical reality. For the Physicist to then ascribe the negative sign to every sub atomic particle hitherto described, allocate it similar but different properties, have them collide either in a scientific paper or a Large Hadron Collider and then examine the readings of the detectors or the results of calculations to establish exactly what was happening at just so many Trillionths of a Trillionth of a ......second after the World began 13.7 Billion Years ago shows just how deluded and out of touch with reality this branch of Science has become. As could be deduced from the above dissertation L'Eau Commotion is sailing blithely Southwards in a steady quartering breeze with minimal input from the Skipper who has found the Cajen Chicken and is about to enjoy lunch.
