Which Way?
05 January 2018 | 745 Miles to Cape Horn
6:00pm Friday 5th January 2018 ( UTC-3 ) The direct route to Cape Horn still straddles The Falklands but I'm beginning to favour the Western way for a couple of reasons more based on intuition than provable fact. It appears I will face a dead headwind tomorrow morning so at best I have to alter course left or right by about 60 degrees ( That is the textbook 45 plus 10 for the slop plus 5 for the sloppy skipper ). To the right there is a chance in another day or so of light North Westerly winds and a track that leads to the Straits of Lemaire. I used the chance last time of running back North through the Straits and heaving to in comfort when faced with strong South Westerly winds and sailing through the next day in a gentle breeze. And if the winds are strong North Westerly I can slip ( or surf? ) through the Straits and heave to under Cabo da Buen Suceso. Love the name. Whenever a comment is placed on my blog I get an almost simultaneous alert ( g'ding! ) on the Iridium and I always look forward to opening up the message. They are most appreciated. To Anita and Holi I say stick strictly to the script and do not let her at her tender age be exposed to the sacriligous thoughts expressed in my blog. The purpose of higher education is to pass exams so that you can enter the halls of still higher education to pass exams so that you can....... With regard to the inner forestay some thought was given to acquiring a set of Sta Lok , or Norseman , wire rope connectors but with the simple single spreader rig if one wire went goodnight! and get out the paddles. Had I done so I still don't think I could have fixed the inner forestay even if I hadn't dropped those few cheap but irreplaceable bits in the drink. About mid morning the speeds for no reason suddenly increased by a knot or more so I guess I must have sailed out of the Falklands Current. At various times in my sailing expeditions I have chased often elusive currents for little reward so you win some, you lose some. My Universal First Aid Kit came in handy ( footy really ) to stem a leak in a misplaced big toe. The stove is now fixed also.
