Slugging Away

02 February 2018 | 220 Miles SSW Cape Horn
4:00pm Friday 2nd February 2018 ( UTC-4 ) About the best course I can make with this 30 knot wind from around the West to North West is 220 T, or SSW. Looking on the bright side this may also keep me below a rather stiff surge threatened in the next couple of days and in that area may also make some solid Westing. Another good prospect is that of a possible South West change early next week. It has been hinted at but a bit too early then to be sure but as the days pass it looks more and more certain. I have certainly lost nothing by keeping well clear of the Magellan Straits coast as the wind thereabouts has been at strong to gale force and is expected to continue that way. The storm jib seems OK up to 30 knots and I also have a feeling I have shrugged off the worst of the North East going current. The day has been one of sharpish squalls interspersed with bits of brilliant sunshine and slightly steadier winds of 25 knots. All things considered a pleasant day as the minimal outside jobs, mainly trimming the WindPilot by using rubber shock cord, which cool the hands down is soon remedied with the ever present hot water bottle. It was 8 degrees in the cabin this morning and now at 11 degrees which with a few jumpers on is quite nice.
