AIS Mystery Solved

22 May 2018 | 25 Miles South Cabo San Juan, Staten Island
5:00pm Tuesday 22nd May 2018 ( UTC-3 )
My concern with the AIS was that probably I was not receiving data from other vessels. I knew my data was going out thanks to email exchanges with Bob and Andrez but I was concerned that I was not receiving as the two large fishing vessels were certainly very close. Andrez checked on Marine Traffic early this morning and advised that I was showing as a pleasure vessel as well as an approaching tanker. This was indeed the case as I picked up the tanker at about 10 Miles and at 5 miles abeam we exchanged pleasantries on VHF 16 and he confirmed he had the yachts name and also the enhanced radar echo - yachts in a swell are virtually invisible beyond two miles to ships radar. Thus the only conclusion I can come to is that the fishing vessels had their AIS transmissions turned off. The photo is of Staten Island on a glorious clear and sunny morning so I unfurled the jib for a few hours until the gentle North West breeze became fickle and variable so now I am on a Port tack under double reefed main and staysail with squally looking weather from the South West. The strong North East going current is very much in evidence so being a little undersailed progress is not great but hopefully the predicted winds from all quarters should get me going.
