Maybe I’m going about it the wrong way but things are not going quite right. Last night we were supposed to get just a solid breeze from the North West or North North West but instead it was strong and squally from the West or North West. This meant putting in the second reef in the main and eventually furling the staysail. This was OK for a while but it gradually eased in the early hours so the staysail was unfurled quite early in the morning. With further easing the staysail was furled and the jib run out but a few hours later a funny snapping sound had me looking at this great tear in the jib. The breeze was then about six knots from the North and because the bolt rope seemed to have a few extra loops round the foil it was decided that I would not try to slide the sail down in case it jammed in this neighbourhood which has somewhat of a reputation. Consequently I furled it up which seemed to go satisfactorily and here I am sitting it out in a gentle roll with absolutely no wind for the last four hours. On the bright side I have a spare jib if I can get this one down, which I doubt, or fly it loose footed. As well I have those two spinnakers to fly in the reputed balmy breezes of the South Pacific. The slices of mutton leg fried up with turnip potatoes and kale was absolutely delicious.
