Winds As Predicted
11 June 2019 | 60 Miles East South East of Newcastle
Day 4 10pm Tuesday 11th June 2019
The wind got up to 20 knots during the morning and whilst not strictly required I put a first reef in the main. This with the small staysail balanced well for no noticeable loss of speed and full advantage made of the following East Australian Current which on the edge of the continental shelf approached 2 knots. Right on cue at 4pm the wind lightened and swung to the South and now South East with barely enough for steerage. Fingers crossed it should continue round through North to North West for a good run down to Gabo Island on the Mexican border. The occasional splash and leap of some small Bonito was seen from East of Coff's Harbour but no luck with the small #4 Barra spoon so it was Cryovac Porterhouse for dinner. Most likely from good seamanship on the part of heavy colliery traffic in and out of Newcastle I was given a good wide berth of at least a mile but where I am now there are no ships within the usual AIS range of 25 miles.
