L'Eau Commotion Setup
12 June 2019
Day 6 1pm Thursday 13th June 2019
That short sharp squall was just that and now the panic has subsided....We are now under jib and single reefed main and while not laying Gabo we have a good slant.
This is the initial installation of the Pacific Plus showing the swinging servo rudder connected through a bevel gear to the auxiliary rudder which steers the boat. The main rudder is set to take up any bias and then the auxiliary rudder takes up any changes. This works well and is designed for larger boats but unfortunately in my case it bent in heavy weather SW of Albany. It was repaired in Albany but failed again SW of Tasmania in rough seas so I decided to use the servo pendulum connecting through to the wheel via a Windpilot clutch mechanism typical for the standard Windpilot. This served well for my recent circumnavigation including the times I had to use the emergency tiller when the wheel steering failed due to sheared axles beneath the pedestal. The current setup is shown in the next photo taken just now.
