Hydrogenerator

14 June 2019
Here is a shot of the hydrogenerator shown close to the Yacht's centreline while still clear of the turbulence behind the main rudder and deeper in the water. It seems to be working well. This machine generates 3 phase power to around 40 volts which is then converted to 13.8v dc with dual outputs to the house bank - 2 x 100ah AGM batteries and 1 x 80ah battery kept on standby for motor starting. The motor starting battery is kept topped up by a 20w solar panel mounted on the Meerkat Mansion roof with its controller. The only thing permanently connected to the starter battery is the WSSRC data logger that only draws 15mA and so can be ignored. The house banks are also supplied by an 80w solar panel swivel mounted to catch the suns early rays and again with it's own converter. For emergency starting of the diesel engine I have two jump starter packs. One is a 12v 12AH gel cell ( which can be kept fresh with a 150w sine wave converter ) rated at 900 amps and one Li Ion rated at 500 amps. Both have 12v and 5v USB auxiliary outputs for radio and Iridium Go emergency back up. The alternator on the Volvo Penta seems to pack a punch and with 100 litres of diesel should be good for half an hour every second day if needed throughput the trip.
It is now 3:30 pm Friday afternoon and we are completely becalmed so to revive the spirits I am about to partake of a slice of Lorraine's Date & Ginger Cake and a fresh brew of Aldi's finest.
