Slugging It Out
27 June 2019 | 300 Miles South of Esperance, West Australia
Day 20 8pm Thursday 27th June 2019 ( UTC+9 )
With a headwind ranging between 22 and 28 knots and under double reefed main and staysail we are in a sort of no manâs land. Just about the right sail area and balance for the 28 knots but at 22 when slapped by a little breaking wave it almost stalls the boat and takes a little while to recover and get underway. The short range forecasts from PredictWind are usually very close to the mark so in the next few hours can expect backing to the South West and a slight easing for a more leisurely 24 hours.
False economy was nearly my undoing with an iPad charging cable. I noticed one had a slight fray so decided to use it till it failed. The plug in cigarette lighter style charger dimmed, so I tried the cable on the Iridium charger which also went out. The suspect cable was discarded and a good one tried and perfect charging. To think I could have blown up two of my three chargers beggars belief.Should my three iPads or two iPhones fail for any such reason I have established a code for my daughters - 3 successive position reports - I am carrying on and will send position each day at 0000UTC. 5 position reports - in real trouble and will head for nearest port or set off EPIRB. The Iridium Go has for real emergencies a panic button monitored 24/7 by Geos. A lesser but still annoying problem was the failure of my fresh water pump for the galley for some as yet undetermined reason. When the slop subsides a little I will get out the voltmeter etc. but in the meantime am juggling a 5 litre jug kept for such occasions with a 20 litre drum also handy by.
