The Echomax announced the presence of a large container ship which was almost immediately picked up by the Icom AIS 18 miles out and was tracked till it nearly fell off the page at 27 miles to the East. In addition it also picked up a Net Marker AIS at 4 miles and its mother ship at around 7 miles, these being low powered Class B instruments so all is now serene in the otherwise poor visibility. Indeed the fishing boat which had a Taiwanese sounding name though registered to the Seychelles was not visible at 1 1/2 miles because of the misty rain and biggish swell. Despite the odd lurch and splash over the top good mileage has been made in quartering winds around the 22 knot mark with only the double reefed main and storm staysail but thought is being given to unwinding the jib.
