Another Pleasant Day
27 July 2019 | 310 Miles SSE of Mauritius
Day50 9pm Saturday 27th July 2019 ( UTC +4 )
In the early hours of this morning the jib was rolled out and the storm staysail stowed. The temptation to show a bit more canvas on the main during the day was fortuitously resisted as now and again the breeze got a little frisky and the 7 knots we are mostly making is just fine. A little bit of sunshine and a smaller swell made for a pleasant day though the complete absence of any bird life kept the lure on the rail. The AIS and Echomax detected the only two ships for the day out to 18 miles which gives confidence to face the heavy traffic coming down the Mozambique Channel and round to the Cape of Good Hope. I have a theory that the swirl of wind coming of the African Continent often builds up gale force winds well to the East of Aguhlas so I intend to skirt this area. Indeed the same thing seems to occur well to the North East of the Falklands, an area which I also intend to dodge. Checking on the mileage showed another thousand plus week which I hope to squeeze out again before the inevitable adverse conditions to be met round the bottom of South Africa.
