My first school holiday job some 69 years ago was at Fred Brown's boatyard at Brooklyn on the Hawkesbury River. If ever you needed some hard to find bolt fitting or tube you would certainly find it if you rummaged around in this great wooden box. There was no charge for these priceless pieces but the understanding was that if you had two of something you didn't really need one would go into the box. I was reminded of this in the very early hours of this morning as we ghosted along under full main and BiSymmetric and an unusual bump disturbed my peaceful slumber. Harness and deck lights on I saw that the furling mechanism had come adrift from the bow sprit and was gently lifting and clunking in the very light following breeze. Out with my collection of nuts and bolts and yes just the thing a 5 mm machine screw and nyloc lock nut which served well till the sail came down at lunch time. I then discovered another 4 mm machine screw had gone to join Davey Jones' great collection but yes I had just the thing that could be shortened with the Dremel. Next to attend to was that leaking hot water line. Would you believe an 8 mm bolt that had almost all the thread broken off was the perfect stopper. And those two shackles on the aforesaid Bi which were coming loose? Safety wired from pieces of a long discarded broken SS strop. Back to the Octopus drive Manual - “ Protect the motor from splashes “ . Those pesky plastic flour containers with the side cut out - a good snug fit. And short lengths of rope? Placed here and there just the third hand needed to secure the rising and falling BiSymmetric as I did the tricky bits in the dark hanging off the pulpit. And it was a really dark night because we had just sailed into a new time zone and the sun would be below the horizon for that extra hour.
