Day 83 8pm Thursday 29th August 2019 ( UTC +0 )
Seeing St Helena would be coming up around midday I decided to divert a little and have a peak at the harbour. Of interest they have recently constructed a second harbour a mile or so to the East with a small breakwater and very large mobile crane with another structure close by which I could not work out. Then on to the old with some formidable official buildings and at least one church set amongst the only few trees I could see on the island. I was contacted and welcomed by St Helena Port Control but declined the offer of a mooring amongst quite a fleet of small to medium fishing craft and local yachts, though I could only make out one visiting yacht with a young family aboard who gave me a cheerful wave. Either because of atmospherics or local traffic the internet is very slow at the moment so I will send off a few snaps tomorrow. And Andrew as you were composing your thoughts on the poled out jib I was in fact setting up the pole to Starboard. I did not immediately unfurl the jib as there were a few bullets coming down the valleys but once five miles off the system proved effective and we are comfortably cruising almost dead down wind at over seven knots right on track for Ascension. Whether I go there is moot as I try to work out the best weather to get through the doldrums but that can keep till tomorrow.
