Sand Haze
18 September 2019 | 15 Miles North West Of Ilya Brava, Cape Verde Islands
Day 103 6pm Wednesday 18th September 2019 ( UTC-2 )
This is Ilha Brava from 3 miles off at 6am this morning. I sailed to within ten miles of the larger Fogo and the lights on the high volcanic mountains as well as the main town could be clearly seen, but at 6am was barely visible in the sand haze from 15 miles. Similarly Brava at 15 miles is now totally obscured in a dense grey haze. Now what this is leading up to is the sand must have come from the Sahara and been carried by the North East Trades which after many false starts during the day might just have arrived in the last hour or so. It is still a very light breeze and we are only making 3 or 4 knots but all the projections say hang in there!
