Dropped Prop.

Just doing a casual check around I noticed the voltage a little low at 12.5 volts and disturbingly a steady green light out of the Watt & Sea controller. A glance over the stern soon revealed the problem - no prop! Mindful of all the exhortations about swimming in the North Atlantic I lowered the main and furled the jib and set a course under bare poles directly down wind which made the yacht quite stable at about 1 1/2 knots. As you can see in the photo the bolt holding the prop onto the shaft was still in place but I am presuming the prop got loose and free spinning over time wore the head off the bolt. Fortunately I had a spare prop of slightly smaller diameter and a new bolt which I installed with Loctite and done up as tightly as I dared. The smaller diameter prop is designed for a cruising range of 6 1/2 to 8 1//2 knots but I am pleased to see at my current speed of under six knots the voltage is climbing back nicely to 12.7 volts with the autopilot operating and all lights and instruments going. Travelling well with the same steady breeze from astern filling the poled out jib and single reefed main.
