With the wind predicted to increase and back to the North I decided to get in early and gybe the main. Because of the odd gust I thought it best to put in the second reef and gybe with a preventer on the Starboard side. All well and good but as I was transferring the preventer to the Port side she gybed and the tackle on the main caught me under the right ear and sent me sprawling across the cockpit to land on my beam ends. Needless to say following good practice and heeding advice I was wearing harness and clipped on and though this had nothing to do with the outcome it goes to show it is best to expect the unexpected. In other good news I noticed the shackle holding down the tack of the jib had come adrift. On closer inspection the shackle pin was seen to be sitting on top of the furling drum, a place you would never put it even in the marina as it would be sure to fall in. A rummage around the glory box and a dead set replacement was found. A really good tighten with the Allen key and six rounds of sticky tape wrapped up the job. I am now heading a little closer to the coast than the direct line - a lot of variation in wind and currents so it's a considered guess at best. Up until recently I thought “ Shortening Sail Before A Squall “ was the title of an oil painting but now I find myself doing it.
