Giving Le Maire A Miss

27 November 2019 | 60 Miles North Of Staten Island
Day 173 4pm Wednesday 27th November 2019 ( UTC-4 )
The wind has now swung round to the South West making the Straits Of Lemaire a dead headwind requiring tacking and even though this is done we would still face a wind funnelling between the high land on Tierra Del Fuego on the right and Staten Island on the left. If that wasn’t enough there is the very real possibility of a surge of current which I have experienced in the past and is much noted in nautical publications. Accordingly we are headed towards the Eastern end of Staten Island and then continue in a Southerly direction in the hope of picking up a wind with some Easterly component. A bright pleasant day with sunshine and blue skies but just now it is beginning to cloud over with the change in wind and possibly influenced by those islands. We are down to staysail and single reefed main which is mostly a bit light on but just right in the puffs.
