Battling The Currents
28 November 2019 | 155 Miles East North East Of Cape Horn
Day 174 4pm Thursday 28th November 2019 ( UTC-4 )
With a strong Sou'Wester blowing a half gale there was no way I was going to short tack in the night into a strong current through the Straits Of Le Maire so we headed for the Eastern tip of Staten Island. Of note was the very strong North going current of at least 2 1/2 knots to the East of the island which I got an occasional glimpse of through the heavy cloud and showers from 18 miles off. It's been rough going all day with about the maximum sail I should be carrying - double reefed main and storm staysail but it was needed to battle the current which is now much reduced as we quit the continental shelf and are now in 2000 to 4000 metres. If all goes to plan the wind should ease soon and hopefully be a light Southerly by morning. And yes Constantine you got that spot on!
