Keeping Offshore
07 December 2019 | 60 Miles North North East Of Isla Desolacion, Straits Of Magellan
Day 183 3pm Saturday 7th December 2019 ( UTC-5 )
The wind eased slightly towards evening so a comfortable night was spent under staysail and double reefed main making a nice offing across the Straits Of Magellan and wondering whether I should shake out another reef. But not for long as the grey impenetrable overcast got a little less grey but the wind got a little more gutsy. Not only that but it veered slightly to the North West so all day has been spent trying to keep going and at the same time keep clear of the coast which has been totally obscured since I last saw it five days ago. It was not until I was one and a half miles away did I temporarily catch site of this island dead ahead and of course had to go about. I am now on an offshore tack which will probably cost me six hours of progress but what is six hours when I have all of this year and most of next available. I will have to face another North to North Westerly tomorrow but hopefully it will stay below 35 knots and not last too long. I also screwed up my Predictwind access by touching the iPad with a piece of clothing but Sam Of Predictwind had me back on track within hours. Enveloped in this cold grey misty lumpy bit of the world but otherwise travelling, in the wrong direction, quite well.
