Arrived in Moorea
13 July 2014 | Cooks Bay as in Captain Cook
Russ
Arrived in Cooks Bay, Captain Cook's favorite Bay apparently in a bit of cloud and very hot and humid. Quite sheltered and not very big it is surounded by dramatic mountains and spires all verdent green and lush looking. The Bali Hai hotel is near the mouth of the bay which was a meca in the 50's and 60's and has been resurrected to remain an iconic and exotic vacation retreat for the fortunate. We will go over and have a beer later. As we motored into the bay the cooling water was not flowing out as much as it should be and after anchoring in 60 feet I went down to investigate. The freezer was on and also draws raw water from the same manifold and it was slurping, not a good sign. After a quick diagnosis we found a crack in the sea water manifold and Gwen the "glue queen" is having at it right now. Should be a simple fix but it appears we will need to build a new sea water manifold as soon as we can locate the parts to cobble one together. At least it is a basic challenge and a known gremlin. Yup spare time just got reduced some more. Also the sail bag has got to be done before we move from here and attempt the crossing to Raiatea and Bora Bora, dont need a mid sea calamity although it would be weird to arrive somwhere without one having occurred. Here are a couple of photos of Moorea. Think we will hang here for a week or so and try to relax. I think it was Captain Cook's favourite place way back when the native girls paddled out to the ship all naked and wanting to trade with the white folk strangers for all the exotic things they brought like nails and buttons and shiny new things, amazing things they could never imagine existed all the while the fresh fruit and water was way more valuable to the wayward sailors and the girls well, they were pretty popular too. Too bad we missed Pitcarin where the Bounty was scuttled and Fletcher Christian and the men made a home in paradise. His and the other men's descendants still inhabit the island.
