Going back to school
16 May 2011 | St. Mary's River
John and Cheryl
Cheryl's Notes:
We had a great sail down the Rappahannock River yesterday, but that ended when we turned north. The wind was directly behind us and too flaky to get any boost. We ended our day by motoring into Mill Creek. This is right off of Ingram Bay and one of the prettiest anchorages we have ever been in. We would have liked to stay longer, but we are beating feet to get to St. Mary's River before some weather moves in.
This morning we motored all the way to the Potomac River and then up St. Mary's River. We had no wind at all today. We left as the fog was lifting and then out in the bay we got completely socked in again. We had about an hour of cruising by radar and charts only. Luckily, you can hear the crab boats before you see them.
We are now anchored in front of St. Mary's College. It is one of the coolest campuses I have ever seen. We are tucked into Horseshoe Bend and will probably stay here through some coming storms. We will then start making our way up the Potomac to DC.
John's Notes:
Retrained on radar this morning. We had lots of fog for the first hour and a half this morning. I see them on radar but Cheryl listens for them. As long as we don't run into them, I don't care how we identify them. The fact that the water was flat calm and constant dodging of a couple of thousand crab pots pretty much precluded any sailing today. Took advantage of the flat water to fool with the autopilot. Adjusted the rudder gain and that seemed to smooth it out quite a bit. Auto did most of the steering today. I just love it when things work.
The weather is supposed to be iffy for the next few days. If necessary, we will hold up here for a while. Here on the boat we have good internet from the college but no TV. Can't wait to eat at the cafeteria again!
