Russia Our Enemy?

John woke me with an apology. There was a large Russian fishing trawler that seemed to be trying to intercept us. John thought it was trawling and that we needed to be ready to get out of the way. But evading a ship with seemingly random course adjustments is not straight forward. Soon, however, it became apparent that the MV Professor Kaganovski was not trawling but coming alongside for a look. I called their radio operator, hoping to chat but he was a man of few English words. What he did say was "Don't vorry, vee are looking for you". What he meant was that they were looking at us. Soon they were alongside and, if only you could see the photos, you would see the bridge and lower decks lined with the officers and crew, male and female, all smiling broadly, waving and taking photos. And of course we reciprocated. All two of us. It was heartwarming, really. Then they steamed away leaving John and I in the gray sea and sky. Last night the fog was so thick it was like smoke but today it disappeared with the sun and we had the most brilliant day possible. A flat sea and a fair breeze blowing us steadily toward Attu. But tonight, still a fair breeze and a flat sea but the fog is back, perhaps for good this time. xxx
