Sandpoint Chronicles-Day 6
06 July 2015 | Sandpoint, Popof I, Alaska, USA

Well, I guess this is it. The rain has appeared to cease. The barometer is rising. Time to go. Sandpoint has been a memorable place to hang out in stormy weather. This place has to epitomize the home of the rugged and independent Alaskan or far that matter humankind. Still, in these times, cut off from many of the conveniences we take for granted. Supplied by the weekly supply ship, weather permitting, air transport, weather allowing. So far no flights in five days. But a tight community focused on keeping Sandpoint alive and relevant. I will treasure the conversations I have had with these humble folks as I have learned about their lives and even their dreams as they stop by Let's Go! to chat. I never expected to spend so much time here. But it has been a pleasure and all because of the people that live and work here. (cruiser notes: It would be a good idea to let the Harbor Master know that you are coming and his telephone number is on C-Map or in the Pilot Book. But it is not necessary. Call VHF 6 on entry. There is a transient pontoon on the far right upon entering the small boat harbor to which you may tie either side. We paid $23 a day for 44 ft. There is power available. Showers under the Harbor Master's office. Fuel, laundry, showers and meals available at Trident fish processing up the road and to the left of the harbor. A good cafe just to the left of the ramps leading up from the pontoons but only open until 3 PM. Another cafe, supermarket and ATM up the main road to the left of the harbor. A bar along the road leading up the hill toward the supermarket. Sandpoint: It has it all!
