We are posting this blog today to let you know that Leu Cat is no more. The new owners, Doug and Susan, emailed us the other day to share with us that Leu Cat was distroyed by the hurricane Irma when Irma passed over SInt Maarten with winds of over 200 MPH. SUsan wrote:
"It is my sad task to tell you that Leu Cat is a total loss from Hurricane Irma.
According to the last AIS transmission, she ended up against the Skipjack Restaurant on Welfare Road at the short bridge to Snoopy Island at 5:05 am on Wednesday, Sept. 6. That was almost immediately after the hurricane hit St. Maarten.
With that information, Ian found her at that location today under a pile of wrecked boats with only the flags on the forward hulls visible to identify her. She is in small pieces as she was blown through the causeway bridge. We are saddened also to know that he lost his Leopard catamaran (which was a business in addition to his surveying) as well. He has very kindly offered to help us in any way but we have yet to hear from Reggie.
So now it's pick up the pieces and try to move forward.
We grieve for the loss of the most wonderful boat that gave us 10 years of such joy and protected us as we sailed around the world.
We also grieve for Susan and Doug for their loss. While they were wise to have hurricane insurance and should recoup most of their investment, the emotional impact of losing their dream is devastating.
On a positive note, we have moved into our new RV and have started a blog to document our land-based adventure. If you are interested in it, just go to: https://wandlust.blog/ or CLICK HERE
