Arctic Circle

19 July 2013 | Arctic Circle, south of Sisimiut
PC
This morning, we crossed the Arctic Circle (Polarkreis, cercle polaire) at 66 degrees and 33.44 minutes north.

The arctic circle not only marks the geographical limit of the midnight sun, but is also considered as the official beginning of the NW Passage. From here we will sail appr 4,000 Nm (7,500 km) up north to Upernavik, Canada (up to 74 degrees latitiude), around Alaska and through the Bering Strait, which is the official 'end' of the NW Passage, and where we will cross the Arctic Circle again on our way down south into the Pacific.
