04 January 2015 | Deception Island
1st day in Antarctica, on Deception Island - what a day !!
We put on our skis, hiked up 350m to Mt Irizar in slushy snow, did some nice spring skiing down the hill and arrived....
... at a colony of tens of thousands of chinstrap penguins - unbelievable. (Happy Feet, Private and all of their friends and families were there.)
Deception Island is also an active volcano, so we sailed across the volcano crater and took a dip in some "hot" water - the water was about 10 degrees "hot", but we were in it - swimming Antarctica.
Now we are sailing further south towards the mainland (Antarctic Peninsula), to scout the coastline around Whittle Peninsula to find a potential landing spot for our first climb later in the week. Tomorrow night however, we will first need to seek shelter in the south of Trinity Island as some heavy easterly winds are announced.
