Red Bean Party

21 April 2018
Cap'n Dennis of s/v Spitfire

We have been spending lots of time with our friend Dennis on Spitfire. We first met him about 15 years ago. He is quite character and seems to know everyone here, both boaters and locals and has introduced us to some great people. He introduced us to a guy who lives here in Georgetown named Joe. Joe has a catamaran named Red Bean. The boat was built in Louisiana and the previous owner made him promise not to change the name. As it turned out we knew the boat, it was built in Mandeville. Dennis is from Connecticut and was interested in the significance of the name Red Bean. We explained about how red beans are the traditional Monday meal in LA so he decided we should have a red bean dinner party. David cooked a big pot of red beans and sausage. I made the rice, coleslaw, homemade bread, and some brownies. We ended up having 11 guests, ranging from Americans, to Canadians, to Brits. Everyone brought something to contribute to the dinner, salad, a vegi tray with dip, cornbread and lots of beer and wine. We had a good time and ate a lot but still had leftovers. The party went on pretty late and we even had one overnight guest. It was fun to introduce LA cuisine to people from other countries.
