From Suz
Yesterday we needed to go through a 1 1/2 mile section into the ocean and back to get around a very shallow area and continue on our journey. This is called a 'rage' area where is it around 12-15 feet deep and incoming ocean currents meet the Sea of Abaco currents. If the wind is up, it actually becomes 'perilous' as they describe it! This morning at high tide, winds were right. Then we turned back in from the ocean for the rest of the way to Marsh Harbor where we are docked in a marina (weak internet, tv and water) for several days. There is a nice beach very near here for swimming and snorkeling. We heard there is a Junkanoo street festival today featuring kids, tomorrow adults. This is parading in the streets in ornate paper costumes. A bit of local color!! There is a steak dinner, live music and dance at our marina (every Saturday since 1978!!!). Very windy! Glad we are tied up.
Conch graveyard is just where MANY, MANY conch shells and coral have washed up over many years. These are not pretty, although we did find a few pretty new arrivals. Found lots of sea biscuits on the pig beach. Very eerie. Behind the horizon here is the Atlantic, just beautiful, reminded us of things and terrain we saw in Iceland. Sea of Abaco is where we anchored for two nights, and dinghied ashore to conch GY and pigs!! Be sure and check the 'photo gallery' on sailblogs. Pig video!!!
Off to explore!
