Passage - Rock Fishing Trip Horn Harbor Marina, Port Haywood, VA

High anticipation for today, I need to catch a rockfish with Susan on board. She has never been on board when a rockfish was caught. Today looks promising. As we leave Horn Harbor creek it is apparent that there is a slight northeast wind. Everyone on the radio is complaining that the weather forecaster got it wrong again. We are getting hit broadside as I am heading almost due east and we are being met with broadside waves that seem to roll Liquid Therapy in almost a perfect rhythm from a bad roll to worse. We have a 1.5 hour run on this course. It's not dangerous. But, it is wrecking the cabin. Susan calls me on the intercom and lets me know the salon is under control and she can take this rolling, but it's not comfortable. I hear the wine glasses tinkling in the background. (Yes we have GLASS aboard Liquid Therapy as I don't like drinking wine out of plastic. ) Every once in a while we really get a bad roll. Mostly just uncomfortable.
The weather forecast is the NE wind will shift throughout the day through East and end up southeast and light. Still this is an awful course to the fishing grounds. I speed up. That seems to help. With 3 more miles to go I start getting good indications of fish on the sonar screen. I slow and turn south set the autopilot on zigzag and bring the boat down to 750 RPMs for trolling. Liquid Therapy is absolutely fine with this following sea course. The wind seems very slight and the tidal current is running south as well. The ride is excellent. I get the three rods fishing - two are tandem bottom rigs and one is top water. Everything is running great. The fish finder is beeping indicating there is SOMETHING down there. It could be schools of bait fish or it could be rockfish. We catch nothing but are optimistic. The radio is alive with fishermen mostly to our north where they had been catching fish for about a week or so. Lots of boats up near marker 40 of the shipping channel. I wind the reels up and decide to move closer to the channel marker 38 just to the south of the fleet. The fleet looks to be about 50 -100 boats not catching much either. I don't like get caught in the nightmare of lots of boats trolling every direction and trying not to get lines tangled. Sometime tempers flare over the radio as someone gets is someones way. And fish SWIM. So, I tend to stay off a bit from where everyone else is.
We trolled pretty much south all day long. In fact all of a sudden I noticed the north end of the Chesapeake Bay bridge and the York River channel tunnel. We never caught anything. But what a nice day for the last cruise of 2018. About 3:30PM I wound the reels in and set the autopilot for Horn Harbor entrance about 1 1/2 hour ride.

A few 2018 things -

We piloted Liquid Therapy 1976 miles.
We put 354 hours on the engine.
Last January 1st we were in Bill Bird Marina in Miami.
We took Liquid Therapy to the Bahamas January 23rd and returned to USA on March 17th.
Along the ICW and Bahamas we saw some old friends and made new ones.
