DAY 3 & 4 2020 Fall Cruise

Friday & Saturday, September 25 & 26. 2020
0 Miles Old Point Comfort Marina, Fort Monroe, VA
It’s Saturday afternoon as I start to write this. So, today we called for reservations at Atlantic Yacht Basin in Chesapeake only to find out the railroad bridge between us and them is in the closed position blocking all boats with a bridge height of 10’. It will be closed until MONDAY 7PM. We need 12’ and I don’t feel comfortable unless I have 15’. I always have a vision of being bounced by a wake underneath a bridge. That would be an embarrassing insurance claim. We could go out in the Atlantic and come in at Oregon Inlet. Yep I feel confident piloting the boat through the GRAVEYARD OF THE ATLANTIC. Lots of sailors that knew a lot more than I didn’t make that passage. So, I’ll just wait for the railroad bridge to be fixed or we will go north up the Chesapeake.
Basically we have been just enjoying walking around Fort Monroe and pondering how it was to live here in the military. All the housing that used to be Army Officer’s housing is quite spectacular. Everything is owned by the State of Virginia and is now rented. We see a few young couples here. Lots of the places look vacant. Of course Susan and I wonder how it would be to rent a place here. Whenever we walk any town we visit we think the same thing. But many of these grand structures are getting run down with rotting porches and columns. But, oddly the grounds are kept immaculately. My guess is the military had lots more money to fix things. We could visualize parties on the huge porches of these large homes. Yep somewhere else we could consider a 2nd home.
We must have walked 4 miles yesterday. But, it’s been rainy and not great so we have walked with our rain jackets and had to put them on and off. Nothing quite as nice as getting a bite to eat and Covid-ly sitting at outdoor tables in a misty rain. Just wonderful.
What else can I ramble about. Well the guy in the boat behind me just happened to go to my high school, Highland Springs High School. He is 57 and I’m 71. We don’t know anyone in common. Ha.
Our boat is Liquid Therapy. Well I just found a bottle of Ricardo Pineapple Rum we got in the Bahamas. It’s not bad. But my tastes have changed. Anyone want it? You meet us somewhere and we will give it to you.
We got a suggestion to leave Fort Monroe and head up the James just a bit to the Pagan River to Smithfield. We might just do that. The weather is still lots of cloudy might drizzle kind of days. Maybe it will get better.
Today’s picture is a door leading to individual cells in the prison. Jefferson Davis was imprisoned two years here……..
