DAY 18, 2020 Fall Cruise
Saturday, October 10, 2020
Docked - Anchorage Inn Marina Ocracoke
0 miles
Overheard as I walk by 3 guys trying to get a canoe off the roof rack of their 4X4 in the National Parks lot. They appear a little large for the 3 of them to get into this canoe. But still they are just messing around in the shallows of the Pamlico sound. Maybe they are taking turns for all I know. Even if all of them overload the canoe that should be safe enough if the canoe turns over.
WRONG -
They are trying to put the canoe back on the roof rack. They had paddled to Portsmouth Island about 5 miles across the Ocracoke Inlet. I’m not sure they had a clue of what could have gone wrong with paddling to Portsmouth Island. They could have ended up in the Gulf Stream headed to Iceland comes to my mind. I’m sure I couldn’t paddle against that current.
The strong tidal currents in any inlet are something I am very cautious around. I read once about a seasoned cruiser anchored somewhere safe, hopped into his dinghy to just run to the shore for something. You know just a quick trip to the store or something. His motor cut off and the outgoing tide starting moving him to the open ocean inlet. He had no anchor, no water, no paddles, no radio, no cell phone, maybe no life jacket. Hey just a quick trip ashore for beer or something. And, then thoughts come to him “Is this ironically how he is going to die?” He’d sailed around the world with all proper equipment and cautions and now he is being swept out to sea for jumping in his dinghy to just run ashore for a few minutes for snacks.
He lived to type that up.
And, Liquid Therapy’s dinghy is a fully equipped boat. I guess those guys got the canoe back on and I wish them well on the Kanawa River in Charleston, WV. I’m sure they have pictures and stories to tell the folks back home about abandoned Portsmouth Island village ( https://www.outerbanks.com/portsmouth-island.html ). I’m just glad their next stop in the canoe wasn’t people speaking Icelandic.
Today’s picture is the Pamlico Sound, a nice place to paddle a canoe.
