The fun times aboard Liquid Therapy. With - Susan and Brooke Smith

Day 6 of our 2024 Fall Cruise, Friday, October 18, 2024

Passage from Tidewater Yacht Marine to Atlantic Yacht Basin, Chesapeake, VA. 11NM

Wow, we did finally leave Portsmouth with dock assistance to help Liquid Therapy get turned through the wind and finally out of the marina. The wind was blowing about 10-15 knots. The next day was going to be the same. So, we did the spring line turn. I wish had a video. But it was WAY too busy and stressful to concentrate on anything but the turn. After entering the Elizabeth River we headed south for Chesapeake, VA. It is mind boggling the industry and military all along the Elizabeth river. Giant bridge pieces are built and shipped. Fuel barges, gravel and scrap steel move. And, of course the snow bird boats heading south for Florida or the Bahamas.

We enter the Great Bridge Lock. Hummm, we’ve had some interesting things happen in locks. Locks are not our favorite boating thing. We’ve been swirled around to the opposite intended travel inside locks. The boat is influenced by currents you cannot see. We get help from a friendly lock master. Susan and the lock master connect with the line handling for our drop of about 18” in the lock. Susan also has a great conversation with the man as he is from Altavista, actually Hurt, Virginia near Susan’s hometown of Lynchburg. It is a small world afterall. This time our lock through is a charm and we wait on the drawbridge briefly and dock at Atlantic Yacht Basin fuel dock to get fuel. After fueling the friendly dockmaster ties us up for the night. Having left salt water behind when we exited the lock we are in fresh water of the Chesapeake Albemarle Canal. It is a beautiful stretch of water we will travel down tomorrow to Coinjock, NC.

Today’s picture is a view from our boat across the Chesapeake Albemarle Canal.
